To Know

1. The patient visits Mukti with a prescription or request letter from the doctor requesting Mukti to provide the patient with an artificial limb or caliper.

2. When a patient walks in to Mukti, he or she is examined to rule out any swelling or contracture.

3. The stump is examined very carefully to evaluate whether it has healed completely. It takes a minimum of 3 to 5 months after surgery (amputation) for the stump to completely heal and shrink in size. It is only then an artificial limb can be fitted.

4. After ensuring that the stump has completely healed, measurements are taken and the limb is fabricated and fitted to the amputee. After that he is given training to walk. Instruction to maintain the artificial limb is explained by our technicians.

5. Diabetic patients are given special care at Mukti.

From the year 2000 onwards, Mukti started manufacturing most of the core components needed for the artificial limbs by its own team of technicians at its Centre in Chennai. This process fetched us at MUKTI, benefits in two ways. We had the satisfaction of providing quality components in the artificial limbs that are provided free of cost to the amputees, and we were able to train physically and mentally challenged persons in making Mukti foot. The entire workforce of Mukti Foot Unit consists of challenged persons and mentally challenged persons.

When we came to know that the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics based in Copenhagen in Denmark conducts performance tests on various components of Artificial limbs and issues Performance Certificate, we contacted them with a request to test and evaluate Mukti foot. Accordingly, it was tested and certified on par with International Quality Standard by International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics, ISPO Headquarters, Denmark.

Artificial Limbs

Each Prosthesis (Artificial Limb) or Orthosis (Calipers) is custom fabricated based on the deformity and dimensions of the person concerned. A plaster mould of the amputee’s limb is made and then the industrial polymer stem/leg is prepared based on the mould. The Mukti foot is affixed along with other accessories and adjusted meticulously as per individual specifications. Similarly each pair of caliper is also custom fabricated.

Camps

Not all who need artificial limb may be able to come to Mukti. In order to reach out to them, we go to serve them at their doorstep through “Artificial limb camps.” For these Artificial Limb Camps, Mukti with their technicians and materials sets up a temporary workshop at the designated place. The artificial limbs are custom made for each beneficiary as per their deformity and requirements. Generally a camp lasts 7 to 8 days, and 60 to 100 artificial limbs are provided to the needy.
